Coach Tony Dungy of the Indianapolis Colts told reporters today that Peyton Manning will be ready for the season opener despite his current knee injury. The coach was optimistic about his star player’s chances, adding that Manning might even take the field during the preseason. The statement goes against the recommendation of doctors who said that Manning should sit out for six weeks.
Dungy though, knows the quarterback more than any of the doctors and he knows the desire Manning has to play. He is expecting a speedy recovery as the player trains and goes through rehab. The coach said that he had talked with Manning, who is following the doctors’ instructions right now. Even if number 18 isn’t at 100% it will be hard to keep him off the field due to how badly he wants to play.
Some of the great analysts of the sport are calling the 2008 Wimbledon one of the best in tennis history. It featured two of the greatest players of not only this era, but all-time. Rafael Nadal snapped Roger Federer’s amazing grass court streak and with that has sparked a whole new level to their rivalry. The two are just so great and have been in the 1-2 spots in ranking for so long that it is really amusing.
If they are able to retain their spots, which seems likely into the foreseeable future (Nadal is only 22 and Federer 26), the two are likely to start future tournaments on opposite sides of the draw, meaning that we may see a lot more Federer-Nadal finals. The rivalry will continue to grow and those matches, like the past few we have seen between the two, are bound to be filled with simply amazing play. Tennis fans are in for at treat as we have seen and perhaps will continue to see a special era of tennis unfold right before our eyes.
What a game it was last night as the Lakers blew a 24-point lead to the Celtics and lost in game 4 of the NBA finals. It was one of the worst collapses in NBA history and now puts Kobe and company in a very bad situation, down 3-1 with only one game remaining in Los Angeles. I just couldn’t believe it when it happened because I never expected it to happen. The Celtics never really had a guy who took control of the game, but now it seems like they can all do that as they take turns dominating against the Lakers. At the beginning of the series I had Lakers in 6, but I no longer see that happening and now believe that it will be the Celtics in 6 or maybe even 5.
Game five of the Stanley Cup Finals was yesterday and it was one for the ages. The Penguins fought long and hard to keep their title hopes alive as they beat the Red Wings, in a game that went to 3OT! Both sides featured great performances by their goalies, especially in the extra periods. Petr Sykora eventually scored off of a power-play with a little under 10 minutes remaining in 3OT. The NHL couldn’t have asked for a better game in the finals. Yesterday’s battle will forever be remembered by hockey fans as one of the best ever. It featured some of the greatest young talents and arguably the two most dominant teams in the NHL today. The Penguins have gained some momentum off of the win, but I will stand by my last prediction- Red Wings will win the next game and its all over.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are now down to the Detroit Red Wings, 2-0. Detroit not only handed the young team two defeats, but managed to do it without letting up any goals. It is a really amazing feat and I think more general managers will begin to realize that the Wings’ long-time strategy of signing young players from not only home, but also Europe, really pays off. I mean just look at how the Red Wings do every year. The numbers speak for themselves. This year is even better for Hockey Town USA, as the Wings are shutting out one of the best teams in the league. Crosby and Malkin are both struggling like they never have before and just that is crazy. Look for the Red Wings to continue their domination in the coming games. The Penguins may take a couple here or there, but I have made up my mind that I think the Red Wings will win it all. Oh yea, and about the game seven, I don’t see that happening anymore. Red Wings in 6.
In overtime Russia won Canada 5:4. Russia becomes World Champion. Canada had led for two first periods however Russia had scored in the third period and the additional time brought Russia the vicotry. Seemed liked Canda players decided on victory before the game was over.
The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings are on the verge of sweeping their opponents. Both teams are 3-0 in their current series' and they only need one more to get to the moment they have all dreamed of: the Stanley Cup Finals. Both teams are playing formidably well and it should be a great finals match-up. The Penguins have the power of
the youth, which has more than proved itself this postseason. Malkin and Sid "the Kid" Crosby are playing like they are veterans, not getting even a bit cracked by the pressure. The Red Wings, well they are the Red Wings and they are dominant as usual. It should be a great final, and I predict that we will be seeing a game seven in it. I really don't know which team will come out on top though, its too hard to pick one since both are doing so great.
Kobe Bryant is expected to be named league MVP today. His Lakers are one of the favorites to win the championship. Has he repaired his name? It is a tough question to answer, but I think that he is in the process of doing so. If he continues to not be a disturbance he certainly will repair it. It is clear that he is finally satisfied with the team around him and he probably deserved it in the first place. It now seems like ages ago when he was asking to be traded and was almost dealt to the Bulls, but in reality that was only a year ago. Bryant is becoming more of a team player, with less shots this year, but greater leadership. I think that a championship is certainly possible for his team this year (they are currently my pick from the west), and I also believe that in the long run Kobe’s good moments will overshadow his bad.
Who would have though that the Philadephia 76ers would be competing with the Detroit Pistons? Detroit was one of two teams (the other being the Celtics) that was expected to make the finals from the East. Instead, they are struggling against the 76ers, who are playing solid ball and limiting Detroit’s opportunities. The series is currently tied at 2 games a piece and I think we will be seeing an exciting game 7 in this one. I am not sure who will win because it really depends on what Detroit team shows up. Sometimes they can roll right along and at others they seem to stand still. Either way this has been a great effort by Phily.
The NBA Playoffs have begun and some great basketball is on its way. The West, as usual, is especially competitive with only a game or two separating the top seeds. I think when it comes time for the Finals we will be seeing the Lakers from the West. Kobe Bryant is on fire and with Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum they are very dominant. One the East side I think it is very clear that the Celtics are the dominant team. Sure the Pistons or the Cavs may pull an upset, but I really think the big three aren’t going to let that happen. I think it will be the Lakers in six in the finals against the Celtics.
I know it is early in the year, but the Tigers look horrible. They spent all that money and brought in big names such as Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis and people just expected them to be amazing. What has happened is that their bullpen was overlooked and now they are suffering tremendously due to it. Their top reliever is injured and the pen just keeps allowing runs. On top of that the offense which was supposed to be one of the most potent in the league is failing to score. The offense will eventually pick it up, but the relief question will remain. With a great Cleveland Indians team again and the always rampaging AL East, I don’t see the Tigers making the playoffs again.
Basketball recently held its Hall of Fame elections for the Class of 2008. Seven players were picked, all who have great passion for the sport and have done a lot for it. There are some very notable names, including former Knick Patrick Ewing, current Heat coach Pat Riley, and current basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale. Everyone was very excited about achieving something which many can only dream of. Dick Vitale even admitted that he cried when he first found out he got in. It is truly an amazing feat and they are all eagerly anticipating September 5th, which is when they get officially inducted. The inductions will be held at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
I think that each and everyone of these people deserves a spot in the HOF and I am especially glad to see more non-players also get accepted.
Baseball season is here! Opening day for many teams was either yesterday or today, including the Nationals, who also opened their new stadium last night. The Nats left with a 3-2 victory over the Braves after Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo shot with two outs in the ninth inning. I don’t think any team could have asked for a better way to start off at their new stadium. Nationals’ fans left the game happy about both the team’s victory as well as the great views of the ballpark. What is especially captivating (at least for me) about the stadium is that you can actually see the Capitol Building and the Washington Monument from within it. Both sights look especially alluring in the night sky and it is a reminder that the Nats are the team playing for the capital of the nation in a sense.
If Allen Iverson keeps playing like he has recently, then the Nuggets will be a pretty big threat in the playoffs. Iverson scored 36 last night, and Carmelo had 39. With those two it doesn’t seem like Denver will run into any offensive problems. If Kenyon Martin continues to play defense like he did last night, opponents better be wary. Sure the Nuggets aren’t even in a playoff spot at the moment, but if they continue playing like they have recently then they definitely will be. The team is very together and I think they have the chance of pulling some major upsets in the playoffs. In my mind, they are definitely underrated at this point.
12th ranked Western Kentucky upset 5th ranked Drake in a thriller today. The game ended in overtime with a buzzer beater three pointer by Ty Rogers. The shot was from 26 feet away and it will certainly be one of the top shots for this year’s tournament. With this win speculation of W. Kentucky becoming the cinderella story of the year will begin. It is going to be a great night for Hilltoppers’ fans, especially since this is the first tournament win they have had since 1995. I love seeing stories like this, when a team can pull through in the toughest of circumstances to win. But, then you have the other side. The side that is so sad that it can’t speak. Drake is going to be anything but in a partying state tonight. But, that’s the sport. There will always be the winners and along with it will also be losers.
Denver Nuggets set a franchise record by scoring an astounding 168 points versus Seattle last night! It is the highest score by a team in nearly two decades. The Nuggets just keep shooting and kept making their shots. The surprising thing about the whole affair was that not one player even went above 30 points! It was truly a team effort, and a great one at that. This is the second time the Nuggets have scored over 130 against the Sonics this season. It is obvious that Denver’s offense’s strengths are the Sonics’ weaknesses. Losing by 50+ has got to hurt for the Sonics. And it’s not like it was a one time thing, since last time they lost by 40+. This game just left me speechless; the score just speaks for itself: 168-116.
Pat Riley, coach of the Miami Heat, has said that Dwayne Wade will not play in the final 21 games of the Heat’s season. He has struggled with knee problems through the course of this year and this is just a cautionary step. The Heat, who are 11-50 don’t really have a chance at the playoffs, so this is best for the future. Some are surprised that the call was made so early, but I think it was a great decision by Riley. The team isn’t going anywhere this season and doing this takes pressure off of Wade to try to force a quick recovery. This way he will be able to take his time and treat his knee with whatever is necessary to be in the best shape for next season.
And for now enjoy Dwayne Wade Highlights:
Today Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Brett Favre has announced that he is retiring, for real this time. For several years he has contemplated retirement, but always came back because of his love for the game. He had his critics, but he disproved them last year by having a phenomenal season. Sadly, without a potent running game the Packers weren’t able to win a championship, which is all Favre has wanted in recent years. He already has a ring, but he wanted to end his career on a high note. Even without winning last year I think it is clear that he has left on a high note. I see Favre as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game in terms of skill, leadership, and being a good respect. I truly respect the guy and I think most football fans do. It will be sad to see him go, but number 4’s legacy will live on. By the way, this might be a good time to go out and get one of Brett Favre's jerseys.
Today Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers got a monster deal worth $102 million over eight years. Mike and Mike in the Morning (a radio show) brought up a pretty tough question: looking at it from what we know now who would you have picked: Eli Manning or Roethlisberger? Both came into the NFL in the same draft 3 years ago and since then both have one a championship. The radio hosts were quite unsure, but in the end went with Roethlisberger due to his consistency. I’m not sure if I would go the same way though. Sure Roethlisberger has been consistent, but everyone doesn’t start out great. What Eli showed in this past postseason was amazing and he was the reason for so many upsets. I really think that Eli has changed and will continue to play well from now on. If he can play even nearly as good as he did in the playoffs then I’ll take him over Big Ben any day.
Just when it seemed like Barry Bonds’ career was over, it isn’t. Maybe. The Devil Rays are thinking of making him an offer. At first I was really surprised, thinking "Why would anyone want to sign this guy?" But, after further scrutiny I realized that this might be the perfect move for the Devil Rays, at least from the business perspective. It would certainly get them a lot of attention and it would raise ticket sales. More importantly, it might show that the team is trying to win, unlike their lackluster state rival the Florida Marlins. This could turn into a potential fan-grab, favoring the Rays. I think it’d be weird seeing Bonds back in uniform, especially in a D-Rays uniform.
The Yankees finally issued jersey number 21 to a player this offseason. The coveted number once worn by the great Paul O’ Neill is going to be worn by new Yankee Morgan Ensberg this year. Many thought that number 21 would be retired by the Yanks, but it doesn’t look like it will happen soon. It’s still possible though, I certainly hope so as O’ Neill was great for the team especially during the World Series’ runs. One of the problems with retiring O’ Neill’s number (or anyone’s really) is that the Yanks already have 15 retired numbers and they are already limited at times. That’s a problem only the greatest team in baseball would have :)
Curt Schilling, 41 year old pitcher for the Red Sox, has decided to try to work out and strengthen his shoulder instead of going through surgery like his doctor recommended. It is a serious injury, but if Schilling misses a year at this tender age that could certainly mean the end of his career. Also, opting for surgery would give the Sox the option to void his $8 contract for this year. Boston has an influx of pitchers at the moment, so losing Schilling wouldn’t be too bad, but having him there would probably be better. It is all a question of health vs. his career and it looks like Schilling wants to take his career over his health. Whether it is a good or bad decision, we will find out in a few months.
