It’s not the Sunday Night Game In America this week on NBC (ie, the Flex Game), and I can’t blame Fox Sports for protecting it, but the Dallas Cowboys/New York Giants tilt at the Meadowlands this Sunday is clearly the game of the week in my books. And there is nothing like a good implosion behind locker room doors to bring out the best in a dysfunctional team.

If you have hockey fans on your holiday list, consider picking up a copy of Stephen Brunt’s new book Searching for Bobby Orr. Brunt, a columnist with the Globe and Mail Newspaper, writes a very insightful account about Bobby Orr - the person and the hockey player. Brunt clearly states that this is an unauthorized biography. I am fortunate to have a few memories of seeing Bobby Orr play, but honestly, I was just too young to remember much. Most of my memories of Bobby Orr come from my father and older brother. Having said this, Brunt is able to capture the magic of a player I still consider the greatest to ever play the game.

There is definitely a recurring theme in the NFL these days – Tony Romo, Vince Young, Philip Rivers, Matt Leinart - all newborns to the starting quarterback role in the NFL and all wasting no time in solidifying their roles.
First we have Tony Romo, who could have come completely unraveled with all the early season upheaval in Dallas, but instead after being handed the reigns by Bill Parcells, has taken the Cowboys to the top of the NFC East. I hope the network execs are successful in moving the Cowboys/Giants game to Sunday Night on December 3rd – it is clearly the match-up of the week.

The NFL has done an outstanding job of scheduling this year, including the decision to turn Thanksgiving into a triple header. But now our focus turns to College ball. Teams are still jockeying for bowl games, and Ohio State is waiting to find out who they will meet in the BCS Championship.
Today’s game between LSU and Arkansas and tomorrow night’s Game of the Week between Notre Dame and USC will go a long way to clarifying the picture.

Happy Thanksgiving, America. While you’re preparing the turkey and selecting your seat for today’s NFL menu, here are a few tidbits to chew on. Nothing too heavy, just some thoughts:
• How crazy will the free agency sweepstakes get this year in Major League Baseball? Gary Matthews, Jr. – 32 years old. .313 with 102 runs, 19 homers, 79 RBI, .371 on base percentage – price tag? $50 Million for 5 years with the LA Angels. Am I the only one who thinks this is steep? What next? Does this put Barry Zito in Steinbrenner Land for at least 6 years at, I don’t know, $85 - $90 Million? And let’s not forget about a little negotiation going on between the Boston Red Sox and Scott Boras for a pitcher yet to even throw a ball in the Majors - Daisuke Matsuzaka. After dining in LA last weekend, Matsuzaka is back in Japan and the negotiations have officially begun. I still stay this deal doesn’t get done for under $100 Million.

I know the MVP Award isn’t based on cumulative stats and consistency, but it is difficult to come up with the right formula for Derek Jeter to get the recognition he deserves - although I suppose this year, a trip to the World Series would definitely have helped his case. His stats were solid this year - .344, 34 home runs and 130 RBIs. So were Justin Morneau’s. Jeter also received the Gold Glove award this year. I REALLY value the Gold Glove. Jeter is the anchor for the New York Yankees. He would be the anchor on any team. He would make a difference on any team he played for. And putting up with the heat in New York should count for something – actually it should count for a lot.

On Thursday, after you watch the early game between Miami and Detroit, and then settle in for the late afternoon game between Tampa Bay and Dallas, many of us will then tune into the NFL Network for game 3 - Denver at Kansas City - well, at least some of us will. Thursday marks the first of eight televised games on the NFL Network.
According to Howard Bloom of Sports Business News, it seems that after the NFL completed lucrative multi-billion dollar deals with NBC for Sunday Night Football, ESPN for Monday Night Football, as well as deals with CBS, Fox and DirecTV, there were still 8 games left. Apparently, Time Warner Cable and Comcast were very interested in picking up these 8 games, but the right price wasn’t met (it seems the NFL left $400 million on the table, deciding that the 8 games might be a nice addition to their own network).

This big XII showdown should be an exciting game for fans of both
teams. Nebraska, with a record of 8-3 has a very strong offense, evident by
the amount of points they have put up when victorious. Their combined
score in games they have won is 311-113!
Colorado, is 2-9 on the season and will be giving it their all to try
to improve their record by handing Nebraska a loss!
Both teams were idle this past week, so they will be well-rested and
ready to give fans a grid iron thrill this weekend!

We’ve now officially entered that part of the year where football, both NCAA and NFL, take centre stage - and I watched way too much football this weekend!
Ohio State/Michigan Re-match? - We Have To Wait A Little Longer
I hope you caught the Ohio State/Michigan game on Saturday. It absolutely lived up to expectations and hype. What struck me about Saturday wasn’t just the on-the-edge-of-your-seat action of the Ohio State/Michigan game; it was the letdown that followed with the USC/Cal game Saturday night. There simply was no comparison between the match-ups. USC should have trounced #17 Cal, but the victory was not decisive. All we are left with is a big question mark - does USC deserve a berth in the championship game? Not yet. Even the BCS computer left Michigan deservedly at #2 after their narrow loss to Ohio State. I want to see how USC does next weekend against Notre Dame. They will lose if they wait until the fourth quarter to put serious points on the board against Notre Dame.

Saturday – 3:30 pm – ABC – warm up the set and get comfy. It just doesn’t get any better than this – in any sport. Remember, this is the first time in over 100 years that these teams have been ranked 1 and 2. If you’re still not convinced to slot this in tomorrow, here’s a little stat to think about – the series record between Ohio State and Michigan is 24-24-2. And for the first time since 1973, both teams have perfect records.
With a loss tomorrow, Michigan will likely be knocked right out of the championship game. But let’s leave all that talk about the BCS on the sidelines for now. That can wait until next week – we have a game to play. A very special game.
I know the Boston Red Sox really took the August defeats at the hands of the Yankees hard, but I absolutely underestimated the devastation. As you know, I was sure that George Steinbrenner would win the Daisuke Matsuzaka sweepstakes. My god, the Yankees were resoundingly and firmly put in second place by the Red Sox insane bid of $51.11 million! Or were they?

Have a look at the NFL races – there are 12 teams on the bubble at 5-4 or 4-5. The San Diego/Cincinnati shootout was riveting. And the Sunday Night game between the Giants and the Bears gave all of us a glimpse at what we can expect from the playoffs. Remember the Baltimore Ravens of a few years ago? All defense and little emphasis on offense - low scoring games that appeared designed to put teams (and fans to sleep). It would appear that we are heading for a completely different style of playoffs this year. I prefer the end to end shoot-out style, the type of game where everyone – players, coaches and fans – is spent at the end. And this leads me to my second comment today.

This SEC showdown should prove to be a super exciting game. Auburn had only lost one game (to Arkansas by the score of 27-10) until this past weekend, where they dropped their second game, to Georgia by the score of 37-15. Even with this loss, anything Auburn (not only our awesome selection of game used football jerseys, but our incredible line of new merchandise items as well) is one of our biggest sellers! We have sold more Auburn hardhats than hardhats from any other school other than the #1 team in the country…. Ohio State!

I can almost accept Terrell Owens’ dropped perfect pass from Tony Romo last Sunday that would have probably lead to a Dallas victory. Too bad. Division wins and losses usually mean the difference between heading to the post season and heading to your locker to clean it out.
What I will remember from last Sunday’s game is Terrell Owens and his celebratory nap in the end zone that cost the Redskins 15 yards in the process. Does this “player” ever have his head in the game? When will Bill Parcells step up and put an end to the on-field antics? Sunday’s loss to the Washington Redskins was devastating. Divisional victories ARE critical and looking down the road at some of their upcoming opponents, the Cowboys season will be over faster than you can say “bye bye Terrell Owens”.

The only teams with the coin to step up and buy a ticket to these Sweepstakes are the Yankees and Red Sox, but the Mets might also be interested. The highest bidder gets 30 days to ink a deal. How high will the bidding go? $20 million? $30 million? The 26-year old Matsuzaka is coming off a very successful season in Japan’s Pacific League with a record of 17-5, an ERA of 2.13 and an impressive 200 strikeouts in 186 1/3 innings pitched.
Merry Christmas, Mr. Steinbrenner.
Monday Night Football is beginning to resemble a bad standup routine. Message to ESPN – football fans are intelligent. Bad jokes and sarcasm get in the way of the game. And if the game is a donkey, dumbing it down further only makes matters worse. If a commentator doesn’t add value to the broadcast, get rid of him. John Madden understands the football fan – he knows how to balance information and humour. Tony Kornheiser spews one bad joke after another. And when he started with his silly awards last Monday night – including showcasing Terrell Owens’ bad end zone behaviour, I turned the channel. Enough. Tony – you’re on a very short leash.

I didn’t really expect much in the way of news coming out of the NHL General Managers’ Meeting yesterday in Toronto. It was more of a get-acquainted session for some of the new arrivals like Paul Holmgren and Garth Snow. My hope is that discussion over much-need schedule changes is re-visited sooner than later.
I’ve listened to all the so-called experts and haven’t really heard any feasible solution to the scheduling inequities. I recognize that the NHL faces several dilemmas –- 30 teams spread out over the North American time zones and 82 games to work with.

Halloween is over and it won’t be long before Lambeau Field is frozen. We are halfway there and it’s time to separate the impostors from the real deal. Don’t get upset if I haven’t covered your team. It’s a big league and not every team is really good or really bad. But, having said that…
Who has been a disappointment?
The mighty Pittsburgh Steelers were picked by many to at the very least win their division this season, but at 2-5, the defending Super Bowl champs have a tough road ahead, including upcoming battles with Denver and New Orleans, followed by Cleveland and Baltimore. They need more than a split to make something out of this season. Anything less and it’s over. Coach Cowher should sit Roethlisberger and hang his hopes on Charlie Batch.
