I can almost accept Terrell Owens’ dropped perfect pass from Tony Romo last Sunday that would have probably lead to a Dallas victory. Too bad. Division wins and losses usually mean the difference between heading to the post season and heading to your locker to clean it out.
What I will remember from last Sunday’s game is Terrell Owens and his celebratory nap in the end zone that cost the Redskins 15 yards in the process. Does this “player” ever have his head in the game? When will Bill Parcells step up and put an end to the on-field antics? Sunday’s loss to the Washington Redskins was devastating. Divisional victories ARE critical and looking down the road at some of their upcoming opponents, the Cowboys season will be over faster than you can say “bye bye Terrell Owens”.
Maybe it’s for the best. Owens seems quite content to throw his own career away and doesn’t really care who he hurts in the process. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not a Cowboys fan. Life is tough enough being a Vikings fan! To digress for a moment, my team probably won’t make the playoffs (again) either. But at least team discipline has returned and with it the focus is back on winning as a team (and, yes, losing as a team). The Cowboys obviously haven’t seen the light yet. And it’s a shame because they have a lot of potential. Parcells is pleased with Tony Romo’s performance - as well he should be. But the lack of discipline displayed by the likes of Terrell Owens is overshadowing this otherwise bright spot in the season.
To top it all off, Terrell Owens gives an interview last Wednesday where he says ''From here on out, I'll be a different person…I won't be standing here no more during the season saying I've lost the game. .. I promise you that.''
He then goes on to add “''Once I score a touchdown, I'm going to celebrate…I'm going to have fun. It was an unfortunate situation. If I celebrate, it won't be a situation where I have a 15-yard penalty, but I'm going to have fun. I'm not going to let anybody's thinking about what I do on a football field distract me and take away from what I do.''
There were 9 “I” references in this last statement. You see, this is a big part of the problem. There is no “I” in Team and there is no “We” or “Team” in Terrell Owens.
When Tony Romo was asked about the dropped balls by Owens, he shrugged it off as ''part of the game…You've got to be able to overcome that as a team.''
This brings me back to Bill Parcells. Just once I’d like to see the old spark we saw with the Patriots and Giants - the kind of eruption that gets players’ attention… Sooner than later.
