Have a look at the NFL races – there are 12 teams on the bubble at 5-4 or 4-5. The San Diego/Cincinnati shootout was riveting. And the Sunday Night game between the Giants and the Bears gave all of us a glimpse at what we can expect from the playoffs. Remember the Baltimore Ravens of a few years ago? All defense and little emphasis on offense - low scoring games that appeared designed to put teams (and fans to sleep). It would appear that we are heading for a completely different style of playoffs this year. I prefer the end to end shoot-out style, the type of game where everyone – players, coaches and fans – is spent at the end. And this leads me to my second comment today.
Kudos to the NFL for allowing television networks to bring in “flex scheduling” for games scheduled from Weeks 10 to 15 and Week 17. This brilliant idea has resulted in NBC moving the Philadelphia Eagles/Indianapolis Colts game to NBC Sunday Night Football in America in Week 12. Finally, a system in place designed to showcase match-ups with playoff implications. In fairness to CBS and FOX, they can protect up to five games during flex weeks, but only one game per week, so there is lots of latitude to pick a game for Sunday Night that should be entertaining and mean something.
Just for fun, I looked ahead at some possible Sunday Night match-ups we can look forward to for the balance of the season. So here goes:
Week 13 – either Dallas at N.Y. Giants or Seattle at Denver (Dallas/NYG would probably attract the wider audience);
Week 14 – love to tune into either the N.Y. Giants at Carolina or New Orleans at Dallas;
Week 15 – Philadelphia at N.Y. Giants – could be another shoot-out!
And for Week 17 – Atlanta at Philadelphia – should be one for the highlight reels.
