Quarterbacks Better Produce – Or Grab Some Bench In This Year’s NFL

There is definitely a recurring theme in the NFL these days – Tony Romo, Vince Young, Philip Rivers, Matt Leinart - all newborns to the starting quarterback role in the NFL and all wasting no time in solidifying their roles.

First we have Tony Romo, who could have come completely unraveled with all the early season upheaval in Dallas, but instead after being handed the reigns by Bill Parcells, has taken the Cowboys to the top of the NFC East. I hope the network execs are successful in moving the Cowboys/Giants game to Sunday Night on December 3rd – it is clearly the match-up of the week.

That brings us to Vince Young. The Giants loss to the Titans yesterday could spell the end of the Tom Coughlin era in New York. There is simply no excuse. Three straight losses and total humiliation. Remember the elation in New York when they demolished the Minnesota Vikings 41-0 in the playoffs at the Meadowlands a few years ago? Well, as bad as that defeat was for the Vikings, it pales in comparison to Monday morning in New York. But what can you say about Vince Young? This was a defining moment for him. He overcame a bigger deficit than Mr. 2-Minute Warning himself, John Elway. So while Tom Coughlin attempts to breathe life back into the Giants, Jeff Fisher slept really good Sunday night. And Eli Manning? More late game interceptions. Is it lack of concentration? Or just poor decision-making? Eli probably wishes he was in San Diego right about now.

The best game of the week featured the Baltimore Ravens who quietly chugged along until their defense stole the limelight yesterday. This is the single most one-sided defensive clinic I’ve witnessed this season. Records for sacks, and possibly a record for the number of times a team had to help their quarterback to his feet. Up until yesterday, I thought Indianapolis and the Broncos would waltz to the AFC title game, but, wrong again, the Baltimore Ravens and the San Diego Chargers are clearly the AFC favorites.

And finally, after Jake Plummer was unable to get anything going last Thursday night in Kansas City, we will see the unveiling of Jay Cutler next Sunday at home against the Seattle Seahawks. So Jake Plummer and Drew Bledsoe are clearly yesterday’s news. Gone are the days of loyalty to the veteran starter. The Broncos are still in this thing and Shanahan has obviously lost total confidence in Plummer if he is willing to put the season in the hands of the rookie. Not the first – just the latest twist in the NFL this year. We are in for quite the finish!
