NFL Wild Card Wrap-Up

It’s Monday morning QB time. We’ll be dissecting the Wild Card games all week, so I welcome your comments - and don’t pull any punches. I had planned on reviewing the games in order - but Herm Edwards will have to wait. We’ll discuss the Giants tomorrow – by then, Tom Coughlin will be fired.

But today, we have to discuss the Dallas Cowboys/Seattle Seahawks.

I looked up “situational irony” in the dictionary and found the following definition: “when the results of a situation are far different from what was expected. This results in a feeling of surprise and unfairness due to the odd situation”. Does this sound like the Cowboys/Seahawks game Saturday night?

How can you not feel for Tony Romo after the bobble that cost his team, yes his team, the season. Regardless of the bobble seen round the world, the Cowboys would never have been in this position in the first place without Romo. And it will be a very long, sleepless off-season for him. The Cowboys started out with Drew Bledsoe and Mike Vanderjagt. They ended the season with Tony Romo and Martin Gramatica. Both played pivotal roles in taking the Cowboys to the playoffs. Having said that, they were not good enough to get to the Super Bowl. That was just too much to expect from the new kid on the block. I hope he can get over “the mistake”. It will take a playoff victory to wipe that sickening taste out of his mouth. When he lays his head on his pillow, he will relive that moment night after night.

And let’s remember - Romo’s role as holder on kicks dates back long before he ever threw a pass as a pro. As it unfolded, for a brief moment, I thought he was going to make it into the end zone anyway, but it just wasn’t meant to be. He’s young and can overcome this.

And let’s give credit where credit is due - Terrell Owens of all people came to Romo’s defence. If nothing else positive comes out of this circumstance, maybe Terrell Owens showed a glimmer of character, class and maturity. And who among us expected that?

And finally, Bill Parcells will be back. This is not how he wants to go out. And remember, he is not free to coach any other team if he does leave. No worries - the Tuna will return. There is some unfinished business to attend to. Terrell Owens will not return - there just isn’t room for both of them in big D.

As for the Seahawks, after watching Shaun Alexander limp off the field Saturday night, they don’t stand a chance against the Chicago Bears in the Divisional playoff if he isn’t 100%. The Seahawks are beat up and a shadow of last year’s team.
