The Colts/KC game had enough warts to keep critics and fans second guessing until training camp. So let’s take a few minutes to pick apart the so-called game plan of Herm Edwards and the Kansas City Chiefs.
It was a bad omen for the Chiefs when Cornerback Ty Law intercepted Peyton Manning early on and down the field KC marched - all the way inside the 10 yard line - only to walk away with nothing. Trent Green couldn’t take them in and Lawrence Tynes couldn’t put a 23-yarder through the uprights in a dome stadium.
Why didn’t Herm Edwards switch quarterbacks after the first half Saturday? And why was the Chiefs game strategy so blatantly obvious that even the worst run defense in the NFL had no problem with it? Larry Johnston was smothered in blue jerseys on every play. And 37 year old Trent Green just looked old and done in. No first downs in the first 42 minutes of a 60-minute playoff game. Sudden death. No second chances. I just don’t understand it. And here’s a sobering stat - through nearly three quarters of play only 21 total yards.
The Colts? 22 first downs. Indianapolis should have run away with this one.
What bothers me most of all is that after a horrible first half, the Chiefs were still only down by 9. But still no sign of a Plan B from Coach Edwards. How far were they going to go with such a one dimensional game plan? The first four plays of the game were handoffs to Larry Johnson for a total of 3 yards. Four quarter total? 32 yards.
Do you think the Colts defense was just a little pissed off with all the abuse, deserved as it was. So credit where credit was due. Both defenses came to play today, but only one coach had a strategy. And the prize? A date with the Baltimore Ravens. Rookie Running Back Joseph Addai will be hard pressed to rush for triple digits against this defense. And the Ravens are anything but one dimensional. I hope the Colts and their fans enjoyed their Wild Card victory, because they won’t beat the Ravens.
