Just when it seemed like Barry Bonds’ career was over, it isn’t. Maybe. The Devil Rays are thinking of making him an offer. At first I was really surprised, thinking "Why would anyone want to sign this guy?" But, after further scrutiny I realized that this might be the perfect move for the Devil Rays, at least from the business perspective. It would certainly get them a lot of attention and it would raise ticket sales. More importantly, it might show that the team is trying to win, unlike their lackluster state rival the Florida Marlins. This could turn into a potential fan-grab, favoring the Rays. I think it’d be weird seeing Bonds back in uniform, especially in a D-Rays uniform.

The Yankees finally issued jersey number 21 to a player this offseason. The coveted number once worn by the great Paul O’ Neill is going to be worn by new Yankee Morgan Ensberg this year. Many thought that number 21 would be retired by the Yanks, but it doesn’t look like it will happen soon. It’s still possible though, I certainly hope so as O’ Neill was great for the team especially during the World Series’ runs. One of the problems with retiring O’ Neill’s number (or anyone’s really) is that the Yanks already have 15 retired numbers and they are already limited at times. That’s a problem only the greatest team in baseball would have :)

Curt Schilling, 41 year old pitcher for the Red Sox, has decided to try to work out and strengthen his shoulder instead of going through surgery like his doctor recommended. It is a serious injury, but if Schilling misses a year at this tender age that could certainly mean the end of his career. Also, opting for surgery would give the Sox the option to void his $8 contract for this year. Boston has an influx of pitchers at the moment, so losing Schilling wouldn’t be too bad, but having him there would probably be better. It is all a question of health vs. his career and it looks like Schilling wants to take his career over his health. Whether it is a good or bad decision, we will find out in a few months.

There has been a lot of scrutiny after Shaq was dealt to the Suns. Why? Well, the Suns are known for their fast and explosive offense and well, Shaq isn’t exactly flash. This one is really up in the air though and only time will tell who got the better end of the deal. In exchange for Shaq the Heat got Shawn Marion. Another big trade recently was the deal that sent Pau Gasol to the Lakers for not much at all. This puts the Lakers in a position where they definitely have the opportunity to win in the playoffs, as soon as this year.

Yesterday’s Super Bowl will certainly be remembered as one of the great ones. It stopped the first ever 18-0 team from achieving perfection. It just goes to show you that in football, you never know. That is what is so enticing about the game; even the biggest of underdogs can overcome the greatest of teams. Not only did we see a huge upset yesterday, but the defense (for both teams) was stunning. Another milestone is of course another ring in the Manning family. Three different people in that family now have Super Bowl rings, I don’t see that happening again anytime soon. This Super Bowl was certainly an intriguing one and the viewership numbers show it. Preliminary findings show an astounding 9 percent increase over last year’s Super Bowl.

The Super bowl is over and it was one for the ages. In a battle between the unrivaled 18-0 Patriots looking for perfection and the heavy underdogs the New York Giants, the unlikely team came out on top. This is quite a victory for the Giants and on the contrary for the Pats. It is also a huge victory for Giant’s quarterback Eli Manning, who has faced a lot of scrutiny throughout his pro career. This should shut the critics up. It is amazing to think that the Manning’s have had 3 Super Bowl winners in a 2 generation period, and there is certainly time for more rings to be added to their collection.
